Can a business write this off?

This is not a charitable donation. R5 Play does not issue a CRA official donation receipt for sponsorship.

A Canadian business may be able to treat the payment as an advertising or promotion expense if the company pays, they receive recognition (name or logo on a list, site, posts, kit, or banner), the amount is reasonable for that exposure, and the purpose is to help the business earn income. That is for their accountant to confirm. We do not advise on anyone’s tax return.

A family or individual backing a player or team is generally a personal payment, not a business write-off.

What a business gets from us: an invoice for sponsorship or advertising, plus a note of the recognition. Not a donation receipt.
